Bulgarian Visa Information
Posted: Thu 14 September, 2006
It is possible to visit Bulgaria for up to 90 days within each 6 month period without a Visa.
As from 1.6.06 all children need to travel on their own passport.
All persons travelling to Bulgaria must have a minimum of 3 months validity on their passport at the return date.
Long Stay Visa Type D
This is required for longer term stays for up to 1year. This is available from the Bulgarian Embassy or can be submitted to Bulgaria’s consular representations abroad. Details are on the website www.bulgarianembassy.org.uk and the form can be downloaded.
Depending on whether you intend to work whilst in Bulgaria, and your reasons for being there different documents are required to process the application. However, you must provide national insurance or social security details, and open a Bulgarian bank account with a deposit of 3000levs = €1550=£1020. A full passport which is valid for the length of your stay is essential.
A type D visa costs £44.00 and the processing time is up to 30 working days.
During the stay a Bulgarian I.D.card is issued, which entitles the holder to the same benefits as Bulgarian’s. The Visa needs to be renewed on an annual basis should the visit exceed 12 months.
Bulgarian Residence
- After 5 years under long stay visa conditions it is possible to apply for residency.
- Attaining residence entitles you to all rights of a Bulgarian citizen except voting.
- It is possible to buy land & properties without restriction, and enter & leave the country without a visa.
Long term applicants are subject to thorough checks by Interpol & Europol for criminal activities. Unless they are clean the application will be rejected. Each application is looked at on an individual basis and takes between 10 days and three months to process.
