Bansko Ski Resort

Posted: Wed 4 October, 2006

Over the last 10 years Bansko has established itself as Bulgaria’s premier ski resort, the small mountain town is easily competing with the traditionally popular resorts throughout Europe.

The other two major ski resorts, Pamporovo & Borovets are purpose built whereas Bansko has hundreds of years of history and culture, and with a population of 10 000, is a bustling thriving town. Its location, to the south of Bulgaria means that it is one of the sunniest and warmest ski resorts, with a long season running from December until April.  The ski facilities are also the most up to date, the Ullen Company, who run the area have made a further investment of €40 million in developing the ski area.

Sofia International Airport lies160km from Bansko, and Plovdiv Airport is 180km away. Bansko is also in the preliminary phases of discussion to construct a new airport. It is planned that the airport will be open all year, as the area is very popular throughout the summer months as well as the winter ski season.

Improvements to Bulgaria’ infrastructure are ongoing and a highway leading from Sofia to Kulata, a town close to Bansko on the Greek border is currently under construction. The estimated completion date is 2008 and this will reduce the transfer time from Sofia by 30minutes to approximately 1hr 15mins-1hr 30mins.

Ski School
The kindergarten ski school provides instruction for children between 4 and 7 years of age.

Ski Passes
Prices are still below most of Western Europe, a 1day adult pass costs €25 per day.

Equipment
The hire of ski equipment is also reasonable, modern equipment costs €15 per day.

Bansko is located 900m above sea level, and the highest run point is 2 600m above sea level. There are over 65km of marked ski runs, accessed by a new Gondola lift and several chair and drag lifts. Future plans include a second Gondola and extension of the ski runs to 200km.
